Finding the key from Tricia Wills, Dog Trainer in Exeter, Devon and the South West
Phobias can be witnessed in all breeds and sizes of dogs, a dog phobia is a continuous, irrational fearful reaction to a situation or an object and can be an upsetting experience for any dog owner to witness. This bewildering behaviour can be demonstrated with any of the following: the presence of a car, car travel, stairs, the weather, a certain walk or even a doorway.
Living in the behavioural presence of your dog and its phobia can be bewildering in trying to rationalise their reaction and unpick the patterns that prompt this behaviour.
These behavioural issues are probably some of the more complex areas to unravel and the stimuli of the cause along with the profile of the dog’s life history and/or the character of the breed and its nuances. Understanding the facets of stimuli, breed and historic life experiences are the key to identify and unlock these behavioural sequences.
Patterns can soon become second nature and if unresolved these initial phobia events once experienced, and repeated or associated to the dog, will create its own anticipation and will prompt a fear response.
An experienced investigation of the stimuli to these phobias and how they are created within the dogs psyche is not to be taken lightly to give the owner and more importantly the dog a peace of mind.
My 25 years + of a deep understanding into the nature of many dog breeds and their situations of behaviour in these kind of circumstances are critical to deliver the correct diagnosis and treatment plan.
